The Basic Photography Workshop facilitated by the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation, Inc. was one of a kind experience.

Kuya Ben and I were enrolled by the company for the 1-week marathon basic photography lessons at Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila.

Our main purpose is to learn the basic functions of the camera as well as the proper handling and camera operations.

During the course of the 5 day activity, Kuya Ben and I shared only 1 digital SLR, which made it difficult for us on the first day. Lecture on the technical aspects, basic functions and different exposure modes using shutter, aperture and iso were discussed and needed hands on. But, we still cope up despite the small problem. We just try our best to listen attentively to the speaker and followed his reminders. The next day, the topic was about composition-lines, curves, the rule of thirds, framing, et al. This was facilitated by Ms. Cely Angeles. We had a singing session on the next day featuring the song “Photography Hym.” We had fun singing this song. On the afternoon, the topic was all about history of photography and the elements of design. It was interesting and very informative session. At last, I had an idea how long it took for the advancement in camera technology and how photography evolve over the years.

The next day, was one of the memorable days in my photography classes. We had hands on indoor and outdoor shoots on portrait and still life using studio lights, reflectors and the available light.

On the last day, we had a half day lecture on the use of lighting, and digital imaging specifically the use of adobe light room and adobe photoshop. As a matter of fact, I am very much interested on the subject matter. However, the day is too short to accommodate all about digital imaging. It would be a great added knowledge for us particularly to me if there was enough time. This would help me improved the photos before I print it.

It was followed then by the presentation of outputs for the photo contest which specifically about composite, product shoots and portraiture. Each photo was judged and criticized by four of the well-known photographers of FPPF and the Assistant Dean of University of the East College of Fine Arts. Each gave their remarks and constructive comments about the photos.

It was the first time I submitted my own photos for a critique session by professionals in the field of photography and voila…3 of the photos were included in the top 5. Much more, my product photo featuring my converse shoes taken with a black background placed 2nd.

I can’t describe the feeling when it was announced. I was overwhelmed, ecstatic and nervous at the same time. This was the very first instance that I got to show my own photo printed in 8x12 and 4R publicly. It looked great and amazing combined in one.

The photos of my batch mates looked very great that’s why I don’t entertain the idea that it would be one of their choices. They are more serious in their craft than me because first of all its really their passion for cameras that took them to attend this one of a kind photography classes. But I am very lucky indeed that I was given this kind of rare opportunity to be with them. It was such an honor to be joining an elite class of future amateur and professional photographers. Because, I can honestly say that photography is not for the poor, it is for the well-off.

Overall, the 5-day activity was all worth the time, the money and the effort. It was such a fun, memorable yet very interesting 5 day session. I have a blast for the past 5 days since I began to mingle and became at ease with my co-batch mates. They were all nice and easy to be with.
